MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic societies.
Reflection: SPAN 306, 330, 304 and 427 have helped me to learn more in the area of literature and culture in the Hispanic world. In the Fall of 2019, semester that I began to study in CSUM, I only knew a few literary works from Latino authors. SPAN 330 and SPAN 306 were the two courses that expanded my knowledge about the literature works from Latino authors. In the SPAN 304 I was very pleased to hear the testimonies written by the marginal people, such as that of Rigoberta Menchu from Bolivia.. The classes were very fascinating because they taught me to know the feelings of the writers through their literary works. I read many poems and short stories, which were examples for me to write poems. I wrote a poem on the day of the dead and I won the prize as the best poem in the class. I also learned in SPAN 306 about the pre-columbian works and then during the conquest of Hernan Cortes. I learned about all the Latin American countries and their history, and how they won their independence and of all the great leaders who helped, such as Simon Bolivar and others. On the other hand, In SPAN 427, I learned about Latin American Women Writers. This class permitted me to know how women fight for women’s rights. It was very interesting to know that the first Nobel Prize for literature in Latin America was won by a woman named Gabriela Mistral from Chile. I have learned so much from all these courses, from pre-columbian times to present times.
