Introduction to Translation: Spanish/English |
Course description: Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish. (Prereq: SPAN 201 or SPAN 202 or SPAN 212 with a C- or better). It has 4 units.
Course Narrative
In this course was teaching by Dr. Paulo Oliva. Our professor taught us about the difference of the two languages we knew. As a Spanish speaker it was a simple way for me to understand him every time he switched English translation into Spanish, but the translation from Spanish to English was very difficult. For our everyday work in class, we would do grammar coursework as well as to learn the meaning of world in context. Our teacher invited two students who are studying interpretation and translation. They spoke to us about the difference between translating and interpreting and gave a demonstration of an interpretation which helped us to differentiate that a translation works with written texts and the interpretation works with oral texts and it is simultaneous. We always work in group for translating texts from English into Spanish or vice versa. This course made me do to practice my reading and writing skills.
